I got up relatively early (for me) today, at 9:00 am. To my surprise I really wasn’t tired at all, despite the lack of sleep from the plane ride. On the road, I stopped near the ruins of a cottage. It’s currently occupied by a flock of Romanov (?) sheep and their lambs.
The next place I went to was The Vee, which lies right on the Tipperary/Waterford Counties border. It is part of the Tipperary Heritage Trail. It was very quiet, except for the barking of a family’s collie, which echoed off the mountainside.
I arrived at Mt Melleray Monastery (still in County Waterford), hoping to shoot the church. However it was Sunday and people were in there praying. Not wanting to disturb them, I left. The next stop was Ardmore and its ancient monastery. There were many old tombs there, some so old and broken, that their names are vanished. The church itself was fairly run down, but there were people still being buried there. The round tower was the item in the best condition.
It started raining, but fortunately subsided enough to give me more exploring time. I happened to drive by St. Mary’s Collegiate Church in Youghal, and stopped to take a look. The church claims to be the oldest in Ireland, and it has a wealth of graves and unusual plants in the surrounding property. There are walls around it which allow a pretty clear view of the nearby bay and townland. Its roof was peculiar, and made of interlocking wood beams. I met a Canadian from Alberta there too, who shoots with a Rebel.
During the evening, I walked around Lismore, the town I’m staying in. I went to a nearby gallery, run by people across the road from my cottage. It started raining yet again, but I passed Lismore Castle and its gardens. I plan on going in there to shoot when the weather gets better. The night ended with three movies, Human Nature, Princess Bride, and Monty Python, along with my first taste of whiskey.
