King’s Day

For 123 years, the Netherlands celebrated Queen’s Day(Koninginnedag) in honor of their monarch’s birthday (even if they were born on a different day). Queen Beatrix stepped down from her throne last year, handing it to her son (King) Willem-Alexander. Since the establishment of the holiday, there has never been a male monarch. Today was the first King’s Day (Koningsdag) ever. We were down in Wolphaartsdijk in Zeeland to celebrate with family. King’s Day includes people usually dressing in orange (representing the royal House of Orange-Nassau), hold parades, and free selling markets in every town. Our selling stand was located at my in-laws’ house in Wolphaartsdijk. We sold cameras, electronics, and some jewelry. It didn’t result in a massive profits, but it was a lot of fun. 🙂
