Schokland

I took a few days off around the weekend for an autumn holiday. Today, we went north-east of Amsterdam. The Dutch basically built an entire province there out of a lake/former sea bed. Schokland is a former island that is now integrated into this newer provincial land. The remains of ancient settlements are visible there in a regional park, and it has some nice nature walking paths. The former island is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was almost sunset when we visited two separate parts of Schokland. One area was a pathway through the woods, to a  series of ruins that once sat by the sea. Only the church and lighthouse footprints remain, but it is easy to imagine the landscape hundreds of years ago. The other section we walked through was a former harbour for the island. It had a very well maintained set of buildings, and a reconstruction of the piers. It was very peaceful in this area of Flevoland, and we enjoyed our walk through the landscape. We accomplished another goal for this visit, to fly our drone and film the area. G took very panoramic footage of the area, and I’ve added it to the bottom of this post.

For more information on the area, you can visit the UNESCO page.
