First Home

Today we passed one of the biggest milestones in our lifetime, owning our first home. The idea actually started years ago, and came to fruition at last. Yesterday we received the keys to our new home, in the neighboring town (next to where we currently live). It is a charming little house built in 1935, located on a quiet neighborhood off the main street. Its needs a little updating on the inside and major garden overhaul, but we’re up to the task!

We started looking at houses online several years ago, pretty much completely clueless. Our patience and research paid off, since we were able to find a property right in the middle of a buyers market. It took awhile to find something that could accommodate a motorcycle and voracious gardener, but this house fulfills everything we need 🙂

The wait to move actually started back in July, since the buying process took around two weeks. We and the owner were so eager, we finished the bidding process within two hours of our second viewing. After final exams, summer break, and a trip to Chicago, the wait was finished.

This morning we drove around picking up last minute supplies for our move, and browsing the stores. Our last stop for the morning was at the garden store, and their small cafe (for an uitsmijter ham kaas of course). We inspected the house and headed over to the notary to sign all of the papers. The process was just as intense as if we were to be married. The laws were recited and we were questioned for understanding. I was required to demonstrate my understanding of Dutch, or we were legally obligated to hire a translator (for an extra 200 euros, ouch).

Immediately after the paperwork was done, we grabbed piles of supplies and brought them over. We are planning on spending the first night here! This is a landmark that we’ve been waiting on, and it’s incredible to finally be here. Much work awaits!
